Ergotron LX Review

Posted by 2toad

Anyone who has a multi-monitor set up can tell you that they take up space and its some times a huge pain to get the monitors to line up right even if they are all the same make and model. Then there is always the issue of adjustment. You want to tilt your screen up but with two or more separate screens one always ends up bumping into another one. Not to mention the wasted space taken up by three monitor stands, a rats nest of cables, and just the feeling that there has to be a better way to deal with it all. This is the only picture I could find of my previous set up. Unfortunately it only shows two of my 20in screens and one 15in. From this shot you should be able to get an idea of the problems.

My Setup

Enter the Ergotron LX triple monitor stand. I have to say the Ergotron LX was much easier to assemble than I thought it would be. It seems they actually thought of more than just the uber-geek when designing this stand. Unfortunately I didn’t take any pics of the unpacking or construction. I was just a bit too excited to focus on anything else at the moment. The instructions were simple and had great diagrams. In fact I’m pretty sure most people could put it together without any instructions. The only part that made me nervous was placing the first LCD on the cross bar. I realized just before putting the screen on that I was placing a lot of faith in that bar to hold my expensive monitors. Quickly I realized my nervousness was unfounded as the monitor sat securely and only moved when I wanted it to. The rest of the installation went by easily and without a hitch.

Originally my only intention was to free up some desk space. I have a fairly decent sized L-Shaped desk but I was starting to feel crowded. Now I have plenty of room after replacing the three OEM stands with the LX. I soon found out that this stand also solved the other problems I mentioned earlier. Now with all the monitors secured to one bar I can raise, lower, or tilt them all as one unit. The monitors all raise and lower effortlessly thanks to what Ergotron calls Constant Force Technology. Basically it allows you (after some initial adjustments) to push all three monitors up or down with no more force than applied in one finger yet still keeping them secure in whatever position you choose. To say I was excited about all this would be an understatement. The icing on the cake was the cable management system. Simply routing the cables through the cross bar works wonders for keeping up tidy appearances. The LX also offers the option of rotating some or all of the screens 90 degrees into portrait mode. I’m sure this is helpful for some people but I tried it out and its just not my cup of tea.

All in all I just couldn’t be happier with this purchase. I was hesitant to buy this stand initially based on their websites MSRP. Lets face it $299 is a bit much for a monitor stand but when I found it on Amazon for $206.99 with free shipping it was just too good to pass up. I have to admit though if I had tried it in person first I would have definitely paid the MSRP for this item. If you have a need for this type of product then there is just nothing else that compares in consumer grade materials and style.

I have already planned my next purchase from them. As soon as money is available and my wife forgets how much I spent on the LX I will be getting the LX Desk Mount Arm to mount my media center pc monitor on. As soon as I get one I will be reviewing it also and this time I will try to remember to take pics from beginning to end.
